Management and Conservation Note One-Sided Barrier Impact of an International Railroad on Mongolian Gazelles

چکیده

We conducted a carcass census of Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) along the Trans-Mongolian railroad in June 2005. We counted 241 gazelles that had died within the previous 12 months. Carcass numbers were greater on the southwestern side in the northern 3 zones, but we found carcasses only on the northeastern side in the southernmost zone. It suggests that impact of the railroad was stronger on one side and that the strength of this impact varied among regions. (JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT 72(4):940–943; 2008) DOI: 10.2193/2007-188

Fragmentation of the Habitat of Wild Ungulates by Anthropogenic Barriers in Mongolia

Habitat loss and habitat fragmentation caused by anthropogenic activities are the main factors that constrain long-distance movement of ungulates. Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) and Asiatic wild asses (Equus hemionus) in Mongolia are facing habitat fragmentation and loss. To better understand how their movements respond to potential anthropogenic and natural barriers, we tracked 24 Mon...

Annual movements of Mongolian gazelles: Nomads in the Eastern Steppe

Determining the scale and pattern of, and the influences on, the movements of Mongolian gazelles is important because their numbers and range have been reduced significantly, and their remaining grassland habitat faces further fragmentation and degradation. Therefore, during 2000e2005 we monitored movements of individually marked Mongolian gazelle calves and adult females in the Eastern Steppe ...

A mega-herd of more than 200,000 Mongolian gazelles Procapra gutturosa: a consequence of habitat quality

In September 2007 unusual precipitation patterns created conditions in the eastern steppe of Mongolia (drought conditions in many places and wet conditions in one area) that led to the observation of a historically large Mongolian gazelle Procapra gutturosa herd (. 200,000). A model developed to predict gazelle occurrence based on satellite imagery of vegetation productivity correctly identifie...

Phylogeny of gazelles in some islands of Iran based on mtDNA sequences: Species identification and implications for conservation

Different species of gazelles are among the most endangered mammals on the Asian steppes and occur in the central, southern and northwestern regions of Iran. The previous conservation efforts in this region have been incomplete due to confusion about the phylogenetic relationship among various populations. So that, different conservation programs such as ex-situ breeding and transfer of captive...

Rigorous home range estimation with movement data: a new autocorrelated kernel density estimator.

Quantifying animals' home ranges is a key problem in ecology and has important conservation and wildlife management applications. Kernel density estimation (KDE) is a workhorse technique for range delineation problems that is both statistically efficient and nonparametric. KDE assumes that the data are independent and identically distributed (IID). However, animal tracking data, which are routi...
